A digitalised version of the masterpiece of Chinese painting ‘Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival’ is on display in Guangzhou between November 20th, 2019 and February 20th, 2020.

The ‘Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival’ is one of the most iconic works in world art history preserved in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. The scroll painting was attributed to the artist Zhang Zeduan and completed around the beginning of the 11th century.

The ‘A Journey Through Springtime Along the River’ exhibition in Guangzhou features seven parts: Open City, Heyday Scroll, Dome Theatre, Song Dynasty Dreamworld, Reading Area, Gift Shop and the Forum.

The exhibition includes eight core scenes which correspond to sections of the painting. By decoding the smallest details, these scenes unveil the political, economic, cultural and social life of the Song Dynasty.

These range from figures of historical importance including emperors, court painters and politicians, master builders and philosophers, to those aspects that defined daily life including environmental design, architecture, furniture, civil and naval engineering, Song porcelain, fashion and the unique history of the Song dynasty’s commercial prosperity and global expansion.

A highlight of the show are the eight installations commissioned and newly produced specially for this exhibition by eight different up-and-coming design studios in China.

The exhibition is also a great destination for both parents and kids. You can have some quality time at the Song Dynasty Dreamworld, an interactive zone for all to learn about the Song culture through a fun, hands-on experience, hand fan drawing, new year painting, lantern riddles, all forms of traditional culture.
