The Death theme on The Story of an Hour

In “The story of an hour”, Mrs. Mallard suffered great sorrow after hearing the death news of her husband, however, she felt somehow free for the death of her husband. She had the opportunity to embrace a new life. At the end of the story, Mrs. Mallard felt shocked then died for the return of her husband.

For my perspective, although this story doesn’t have complicated plot, it drives me into consideration about Feminism and the difference between historical and current condition of women. In addition, one question rise in my mind, what is the symbolic sign of Mrs. Mallard’s death?

Firstly, I consider it as the ironic reveal of Feminism. With Wiki, I could know Kate Chopin is now considered to have been a forerunner of the feminist authors of the 20th century. According to the explanation of her grandson, “Kate never considered herself as a feminist, she just strongly believe in the power of women.” Therefore, the exaggerating motional changes of Mrs. Mallard, the initial fear, and then infinite joy for free time are the ironic symbol to satirize the indifference and ignorance of women’s power at that time.

Secondly, perhaps there are difference of death between Mr. Mallard and Mrs. Mallard. According to this story, Mrs. Mallard was heart-broken, even succumbed to death from extreme grief after hearing the death news of her husband

(“…She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone…” –Para. 3, ibid).

For my perspective, firstly it is because of intimate relationship of them, secondly it is related to the social background at that time. In a patriarchal society at that time, women are dependent on men and subordinate to the male members in the family. For Mrs. Mallard, the loss of her husband means the loss of dependence in psychological and economical ways. Therefore, it is no wonder that Mrs. Mallard would behave like that. In the end of the story, Mrs. Mallard is too fragile to bear the sudden appearance of her husband, which was supposed to be a piece of good news to bring her peaceful and reliant life again.

With such exaggerate psychological and physical movement, Kate Chopin satirized the social background where women were in the subordinate status in the patriarchal society. In addition, she implied that the notion of women’s inferiority to men is deep-rooted in people’s mind.

However, Kate Chopin also used the death of Mrs. Mallard to make the firm protest and to reveal the strong power of women they could have.

In the story, after a storm of grief, Mrs. Mallard had the only and precious opportunity in her life to change herself and her subsidiary situation, as a compulsory duty of housewife required by social convention, in the family. In addition, she was eager to change herself. These changes reveal the notion of author that women were not as powerless as people had thought. Most of time, they just lacked the opportunity to reveal their own power. As result, Mrs. Mallard realized the husband’s death entitled her a reborn life

(“Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will— as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been.” –Para 20, ibid).

Furthermore, the story presented the future expectation of Mrs. Mallard without her husband. Everything is beautiful and lovely in her eyes.

(“the tops of trees quivering with the new springs, the delicious breath of rain, the twittering of the sparrows…”)

With great hope and expectation of future life, Mrs. Mallard wished to live longer. The eagerness of freedom drove herself into a state of fantasy and ecstasy. All of these revealed the protest by Kate against the stereotyped thought of men and women.

Unfortunately, the appearance of Mr. Mallard shattered her expectation of new life, new situation, and new status into pieces. Mrs. Mallard was so reluctant to go back her former life that she gone into final destruction this time. The death of Mrs. Mallard at the end of the story had profoundly deepened the notion of Kate, the individual fate against whole society and the pursuit of freedom for women.

Conclusion

In The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin exactly narrated a story about life and death. Mrs. Mallard was the symbol of a victim in the patriarchal society. However, her tragic death made the strong condemnation to the patriarchal society and appealed to the pursuit of freedom, independence of women.

InLinguistics aspect,

Researchon dialogue effect in DesperateHousewives

1.conversationalimplicature on Desperate Housewives

Conversationalimplicature is a type of implied meaning, deduced on conventional meaning underthe guidance of the CP and its maxims. In Desperate Housewives, focused onlife-like American community, is characterized by numerous usage ofconversational implicature that strengthens plot appeal. Conversationalimplicature is mainly express by the form of speech. Therefore, to research theform of speech is the priority to illustrate the conversational implicature.

2.Ostensive communication on Desperate Housewives

Comparedwith conversational implicature, ostensive communicationpay more attention on the mechanism of linguistic. That is, communicationis not simply a matter of encoding and decoding, it also involves inference onthe part of the hearer and ostension.

3.The examples and analysis

Example1 (metaphor)

Renee:Oh, Doug screw up a lot, but his apologies are always the 4th ofJuly.

Whyis “apology” related to “the 4th of July”? Actually the day, 4Thof July is the national day in America, is supposed to be cerebrated all overthe country. In this dialogue, it means Doug is good at entertaining others.Women will be as happy as in National Day. Instead of expressing its meaningdirectly, it conveys the application of conversational implicature to sublimatesuch conversation.

Example2 (metaphor)

John:I can see the family resemblance.

Calos:She is my niece.

John:It must’ve been a windy day when the apple fell off that tree.

Hereis the background. There was an affair between Gaby and John many years ago, soJohn and Calos, Gaby’s husband, are rivals in love as regarded. Theyencountered each other at restaurant. John had considered Anna as Gray’s nieceto compliment her beauty, however, Anna actually is a niece of Calos. John useda metaphor to express that Anna doesn’t look like Calos so as to satirize hisugliness. This metaphor successfully practice the conversational implicature tomake the conversation wise, humorous and funny, play an important role on thecomedy effect.

 Example3 (pun)

Bree:Well, it’s just that she’s so… cheap. She’s beneath you.

Karl:Not yet, but she will be.

Itis doubtless that this conversation is a typical application of ostensivecommunication. “Beneath” is a pun word, one meaning is “not good enough for”,the other is “under somebody or something in space. Bree meant that Edie wasnot good enough for Karl, but Karl deliberately misunderstood her meaning, expressed that he would have an affair with Edie. Ostensive communication paymore attention on the mechanism of linguistic, this pun word offers differentinterpretation, profoundly describe characters’ psychological activities andsharp their characteristic.

 Example4 (pun)

Bree:Sorry, I’m late. I had three parties to prepare for.

Susan:How tiring that must be for you, judging all those affairs.

Inhere again, “affairs” is a pun word to reflect ostensive communication. “Affair”can refer to work, things as well as an illicit sexual relationship.Apparently, Susan used “affair” to express latter meaning so as to express heranger and sarcasm. In addition, it express this meaning in an euphemistic way, thereby content with the principle of

ostensive communication

 Example5 (personification)

Calos:You’d rather scrub the toilets than teach your daughter?

Gaby:Well, at least the toilet won’t talk back.

It’sone of the most interesting personification in Desperate Housewives. For my perspective, personification could bea typical application for both conversational implicature and ostensivecommunication. For this instance, Gaby would hire a home teacher rather than teachher daughter at home. She personified the toilets, then expressed her unwilling(conversational implicature) in a humorous and vivid way (ostensivecommunication).

 Example6 (allusion)

Susan:He got a little aggressive. I had to use my taser. Part of my was like:” zip!And that’s for ‘Beowulf’!”

Beowulfis the legend hero in ancient epic of western countries. Susan here useallusion to express her courage and determination. In this conversation, theusage of allusion is a reflection of conversational implicature and ostensive communication. Above all, it acquired historicalbackground and cultural understanding to use allusion. If understood, it isdefinite to increase more connotation of conversation.

Conclusion

Thisessay discuss some figure of speech on Desperate Housewives. With thisexamples, it would be understood that figure of speech is not only forincreasing expressive force of language, but also the practical application oflinguist principle such as conversational implicature and ostensivecommunication. In addition, this essay illustrates some personal interpretationof these principle, thereby foster myself the awareness academic research onLinguistics.

Analysis of symbolic description on Hills Like White Elephant

It is common for Ernest Miller Hemingway, the outstanding writer in American literature history, to use plenty of symbolic description in his works. Through implicit, concise and sophisticated diction, the symbolic description is introduced to guide readers the profound meaning. Therefore, as one of renowned short stories, Hills Like White Elephant is characterized with implicit environmental description, simple plot and concise but dramatic conversation. In a word, they are the symbolic description.

Symbolic description on environment

As many other fictions of Hemingway, the background of this passage is also in a foreign place, a railway station in Spain. Firstly the exoticism sets the strange and curious tone for this passage. In this short story, there are three concise descriptions on environment. Sentences like “there was no shade and no trees” drive our tension, while section like

“Across, on the other side, were fields of grain and trees along the banks of the Ebro. Far away, beyond the river, were mountains. The shadow of a cloud moved across the field of grain and she saw the river through the tree”

They give us comfort and peace. This opposite but symbolic environment description impresses us and paves the road to the contradictory emotional confrontation between the two main characters, the man and the girl.

Symbolic description on plot and conversation

The main plot of this story is that man and girl are waiting train to Madrid where they will have abortion. (In fact, this story never told us what kind of operation they would take. Abortion was the ratiocination based on the symbolic conversation) However, the girl wasn’t completely persuaded to take abortion. At the bottom of her heart, she wasn’t willing to do that. The man came to the realization and tried his best to persuade her. He repeatedly highlighted “it would be a convenient surgery”, and “I won’t let you do that if you don’t want“. Actually, even though the girl was unwilling to take abortion, the man insisted she should.

In these symbolic description of conversation, there aren’t any commend and explanation. However, readers can easily witness the indifference and perfunctory of the man. The symbolic description have the magical power to sharp the characteristic.

After listening to man’s annoying and repeated excuse, the girl burst into desperate bellow then kept silence. They were waiting for beers silently, but there was tension and anxiety in their mind. Even though they sat closely, obviously there was insuperable blank in their mind. At this moment, the vital symbolic description hills like White Elephant was frequently cited.

The hills like White Elephant, actually was the symbol of insuperable blank.

The original meaning of White Elephant comes from India. In Indian society, white elephant is considered as divine creator, they are inviolable and should be carefully fed. However, white elephant will eat a great number of food. Massive expense and carefulness were indispensable to feed them and as the result, white elephant become the unwelcome gift. Apparently to the man, the fetus is “white elephant”. The selfish and irresponsible character of him reveal on the symbolic plot. On the contrary, the girl considered “white elephant” as the past irresponsible life style, which she had lost interest. The symbolic description of White Elephant fully discloses their opposite standpoint of the surgery and understanding of life.

What’s more, two measure words also endow symbolic and ironic meaning. First is “everything”(”And I'll do it and then everything will be fine” “And we could have everything and every day we make it more impossible” “I said we could have everything” “That's the way with everything“ ”Everything tastes of liquorice”). Everything is a symbolic description which reveals their different understanding of life. They can’t effectively communicate because there was the contradictory between an emotional girl and a practical man. “Two” is the second symbolic measure word. It frequently appeared in the passage, there by symbolized that unexpected pregnancy and ironic sign for their past irresponsible life style.

It is the symbolic description that embraces profound charm of literature. The usage of symbolic description by Hemingway not only increases the sense of reality of this story, but also deepens the theme of it, which drive reader endless association and interpretation.
