It is a great challenge to build a Undergraduates Activity Center in Fuzhou University because of the huge numbers of student clubs and organizations, the limiting building lot which is under complex traffic condition. Typically this results in a bulky and conspicuous building having several floors.
In order to meet this, a concept ”random ” is introduced ,which includes three strategies--using curvature form opening up all orientations for walking people and creating flexible functional space for clubs,a more friendly, open, enthusiastic environment appeared.
The building lot is a green area which is beside a lake and a fork which connect five roads. Close to the area is campus library, teaching building, primary Student Center and the school centre road, where the traffic here is complex. In order to reduce visual congestion, the project should be unobtrusive in the building lot . By adapting to the terrain, strictly controlling the building height and carrying out roof greening, dimension sense can be reduced.
Undergraduates activity center have to cover three main space-performance space, clubs activity space and office space.
Additionally, by analyzing the altitude difference of the building lot ,a main walking path appeared and three main function spaces layout reasonably, which is depended on the environment traits and the space scale. In order to connect the space, curvature forms is given preference to because it can not only open up the enclosed inner space to the surrounding nature, but also bring gently beauty.
Furthermore, geometry is used to restrict the curvature form to make it more fluency and large-span construction is adequately considered to make the form come true.
As for the land design, a closed curve is used to connect the building roof and the environment, beside which some landscapes and activity equipments are arranged. Students can come into this building from several directions for their different purposes.
By designing platforms near the water’s edge, water-front landscape can be efficiently used and attractive outdoor space has been created. Similarly with the roof greening, students can walk along the building’s ground part to the roof and have a different sight for their university. This uncertainly function and friendly space increase communication, energy, social contact and campus vitality.
There are 103 student clubs and organizations in Fuzhou University. By analyzing the statistics of every organizations in campus, they can be classified in seven categories. In order to meet the space using demand of every organizations, flexible functional space is the first choice and there are two methods.
As for the performance space, external wall of can open automatically to change stage direction to meet different using such as outdoor cinema, bidirectional stage, semi-open-air stage and so on.
Similarly, the internal wall of activity place can be folded and moved freely by using special structure to assume different requirements of clubs. Large-span spatial structure enhance functional flexibility and internal spatial variability.
In conclusion, the project was presented as a large-span building for Undergraduates activity center use. It provides diversified and adequate place for activities of clubs and organization in Fuzhou University, and combine with the campus landscape at the same time.
