Our principal, Mr mobsby, came to our class and listened to the teacher along with us today. Just so you’ll know, this is not common. In fact, this will probably not happen again for the whole school year because this is seen as an activity and is posted on SCIE’s official WeChat account. Anyway, the principal sat at the very back of the classroom during chemistry class. The classroom was usually full, so when Kim came into the classroom(he’s not late for class, by the way, he just happens to be the last to enter the classroom), he found that the only empty seat was beside Mr mobsby. I could remember the ‘∑(ºAº)seriously are you kidding me?’ look on his face even now(ಡωಡ) So he double checked the classroom for empty seats, and then walked reluctantly over. He was really tense for the rest of the class(hahahaha). We even downloaded a picture of the principle helping him do experiments and added words to it just to joke with him. The pics were really funny(LOL).

We also had our MTG club meeting today, and I’m happy to say that we now have a new member, Lucien. I’m the one who introduced the card game to him, by the way. Anyway, we borrowed him a deck of cards, and started our Magic™ rookie tour. The tour was designed to be really easy, but Lucian lost anyway. I can see that it’s because of bad luck, though, because I wouldn’t be able to win with those cards he drew from his deck either (-_-ııı). It’s also partly our fault that the deck we gave him doesn’t really suit rookies.... Well, Lucien did have a good time ,and despite of his defeat, agreed to stay, but Maybe it’s time to work on buiding a deck that suits rookies and doesn’t require you to be as lucky as a European king......

We had Mr Marogi’s class today. He handed out a new poem called Nothing’s changed. It’s about racial discrimination between black and white people. The author of the poem is a black person that returns home after his country abolished a law banning blacks to go to district six. He finds that everything’s still the same because blacks either can’t afford to go there or doesn’t feel welcome there. The poet feels angry about this and wrote the poem. We need to write a paragraph to explain how it’s different from the previous poem Island  Man for homework.

We also had an IA lesson today, we learnt the way to tell your own position with a map.

After we put the substance on the windowsill, he started teaching us origami. The reason, he said, is because the crystals would look nice if they crystallize on the paper rose. He spent about 10 minutes teaching us how to fold a paper rose and failed in the end because the bell rang before he could finish.

I heard that there’s gonna be a camping activity next week. I’ll give you the details after I return.

It rained today, so the flag-raising ceremony was canceled(O\/O). We went strait to our classrooms and waited for Miss Liu to arrive and check our attendance.

We ran laps for most of the PE class, but then it started to rain and we went inside. The class ended five minutes later and we left.

I had my first class at the CCC today. To be serious, I don’t think it’s a place for me because It’s a bit hard to understand. Of course, it’s probably because I joined in after they had the first class. I believe this won’t last long, as we’re moving on to experiments next week.

We’re gonna have our second IA meeting tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it......

It' s still rainy today, so it’s a good thing I don’t have PE classes.

Nothing happened in the morning. I had classes and had lunch, and went to have my English Literature class. Remember when I said that the English literature teacher was really strict? Well, turns out he likes me a lot. I think this has something to do with me being one of those students that answers the a lot of questions in class while the other students just sit there and keep silent. So guys, you ever happen to meet a grumpy or really strict teacher, do remember to answer questions in class. They’ll change their attitude, I promise.

We also had our second IA meeting today. We learnt some legends of maps and I think they’re pretty useful. We also got a form that we’re supposed to make our parents sign on. I’ve already got mine signed about an hour before I started writing this, so I’ll be an official part of the IA tomorrow, probably, since I don’t know when Mr Jami would start ticking on the website......

By the way, guys, remember the doge ball game I told you about last time? It’ s gonna be held in the gym tomorrow afternoon. Remember to cheer for me! Golden glow!

2019.9.9 The lodine clock reaction

We finally started doing experiments at the Chemistry Curiosity Club.  Today’s experiment is the lodine clock reaction.

The Iodine Clock is a kind of Reaction that Displays a Delayed Color Change Using Iodine Species and Redox Agents in the presence of Starch. The Reaction has many variations. We did the Hydrogen Peroxide + Malonic Acid + MnSO4 Variation, which can Cycle between 3 Colors. Now this is an experiment you can do with some basic lab equipments, so listen up(you can go and search”chemistry experiment box”and buy everything you need, along with a lot of nice chemicals with 100 yuan or so. It even includes various kinds of acid.).

You’ll need

Apparatus
[250ml Volumetic Flask] x1 [500ml Beaker] x3
[50ml Beaker] x5
[25ml Syringe] x3
[50ml Measuring Cylinder] x1 [Electrical Balance/Spatula] [Bunsen Burner/Gauze] [Thermometer]

Chemical
[H2O2] hydrogen peroxide [Malonic acid] CH2(COOH)2 [MnSO4.H2O] manganese sulfate [Starch]
[KIO3] potassium iodate
[conc. Sulfuric acid] H2SO4(l) [Distilled Water]

Now, you’ll need three kinds of liquid in order to do the experiment.

• Since we needed to provide chemicals for the whole CCC club, we had to use a lot more , so remember to divide all the amounts by 10.  For example, you only need 25 ml of H2O2....

[Solution A]

250ml 12% H2O2

(Easy to get.....)

[Solution B]

[Dissolve] 3.9g [Malonic acid] + 1.0g [MnSO4.H2O] in 240ml [DWater]

[Add] 10ml 0.8% [Starch] Solution

[Solution C]
[Heat] 240ml [DWater] using [Bunsen Burner/Gauze] to 70°C

Temperature Uncertain, Instruction says: Hot Water Volume Uncertain due to 10x Volume used

[Dissolve] 11.0g [KIO3] in 240ml HOT [DWater]

[Cool down] to [Room Temperature]

[Add] 10ml 1M [Conc. H2SO4] to solution

Mix 25ml [A][B][C] using [Syringe] into [Beaker], wait for change

• Now’s where the magic happens.

Expected Result

Small Bobbles forms

Color Cycle: [Colorless]‐[Amber]‐[Colorless]‐[Deeper Amber]‐[Blue Purple]‐[Colorless]

Expected Time: Cycle 11s, Overall 10 min

• So why does it happen?

This is a redox, the bubbles are caused by CO2(Believe me, you would DEFINITELY not want to smell them. I had one sniff and my nose stung for like 5 minutes....).

In Acidic Conditions, Iodate ion is Reduced by H2O2 .

Meanwhile, Mn2+ Reduces H2O2, the Product Mn3+ is Amber.

The Iodine produced Reacts with Malonic Acid. Iodine Substitutes α‐H of Malonic Acid .

Mn3+ Oxidises Iodo‐malonic Acid to CO2, which(along with O2) produces the Bobbles observed. As the Reactions proceeds, Mn3+ concentration falls, Solution turns back to colorless .

When the Concentration of Iodide ion reaches certain level, it(Iodide) will react with Iodate ion to produce Iodine. Iodine reacts with starch to produce a blue‐purple color

Iodine will react with Malonic Acid again, and the color change of [Colorless]‐[BluePurple]‐[Amber] is Repeated on and on.......

Well, forgive me for pasting, because there’s just so much words and I can’t get them all typed by hand. I did some improvements to it anyway......

Anyway,  it’s been a nice class, and we were all attracted by the color-changing solution. I hope we do experiments again next Monday.

Well, metal house lost in the house competition again(girl’s dodgeball).  We really tried but......

OK, let’s not talk about this for now and get to the other news.

We had a drill today on terrorist attacks and earthquakes. We all locked the doors and windows and stayed inside during the drill for terrorist attack and all went downstairs during the earthquake drill. The drill washed away 20 minutes of the first class, which turned out to be English.

Our English teacher talked about how different descriptions indicate a person’s different emotions. For example, when a person keeps looking form side to side, He might be nerves or scared. We were supposed to play a game of naming a word and letting the rest of the class guess what it means from three options, but the bell rang. What a shame, I was gonna bring out hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia(read as “hexa-koseeo-ee-hexe-konta-hexaphobia”, used to describe people who are afraid of the number 666). I bet nobody’s gonna guess that one.......

By the way, the whole grade’s gonna go camping by the sea on September 23. I’m looking forward to it......

Guess what? We lost in the dodgeball game. I didn’t even get to enter the field because we found that we don’t need so much players and just picked some of the students that got into the team. We lost because we failed to do training for the gym was occupied by a volleyball team. We failed because we couldn’t cooperate well(also because we couldn’t train in the gym). We failed because.........

Anyway, it’s no use thinking about this now. We ought to learn from this time’s experience and do changes. Sadly, their’s nothing I can do about next week’s house competition, because it’s gonna be a volleyball match. Trust me guys, I am definitely the last person you’ll ever invite to a game of volleyball......

By the way, if you’re interested, the house that beat us was Water. Fire and wood also had a match and it ended with wood slaughtering fire into bits.

Now my heart is a little heavy right now, because we’ve had two defeats in a row(How do you say it in Chinese again? Oh yeah, double kneels). I really hope metal house can win for once. I really don’t have the mood to say our slogan, but I’ll write it down anyway. Golden glow......

Let’s hope we’ll have more luck next time......

You need to arrive at school at 7:50(except for the first Mondays of a month, in which you need to arrive at the playground at 7:25 for the flag-raising ceremony. ) The teacher of your class, let's say Metal 2, will check everybody's attendance. You will go and have your first class at 8:00. There are three classes in the afternoon. the first two classes are both 80 minutes long, while the third class is 80 minutes on Wednesdays and 40 minutes long on the other days of the week. Lunchtime on Wednesdays is from12:30 to 13:30 while lunchtime one the other days of the week is from 11:50 to 13:30. The last class ends by 16:20 and the time for club meetings is from 16:30 to 17:30. Friday is an exception, classes on that day ends at 14:50. That’s because some boarders return to their homes on weekends. There are no clubs on Fridays.

I return home after school every day, so I’m sorry to say that I can’t tell you anything about the dormitories.

I’m gonna see if I can take a few photos of the school canteen and post them up. But before that, I need to do some revision.  see you later!

I don’t have much to say today, so I’m just gonna write something about my biology teacher.

Mr Backstroke is a middle-aged Chinese teacher with a funny name. I don’t know why he didn't change it into something else that makes more sense, but the other staff members call him Back for short. He's pretty humorous in class and he always knows how to attract our attention. We always keep our eyes on him even when he is not telling a joke. The atmosphere is never depressing and a joke pops up every 2 minutes or so, either from the teacher or from the students. We don't usually have so many jokes to tell, but you can always say something funny in Mr Back's class. I guess it's because everybody's so active. Though it's only the second week, we’ve all fallen in love with his classes.

Mr Back has a heavy Chinese accent. I didn't really notice it until he pronounced the words “measuring cylinder”as“mayor ciylenda”. It’s not a really big deal, but we often joke with each other and say that If we go to Cambridge in the future and go “mayor ciylenda” this and “mayor ciylenda” that, you’ll know who to blame_(:3」L)_

Of course, that’s only a joke and we all respect Mr Back really much and would definitely not mind a little accent.

That’s all for tonight, see you guys tomorrow!

P.s: I went for an interview for the Channelkay club after school today. I do hope I’ll pass......

I still haven’t got the letter from the IA(international award, one of our clubs) that I’m hoping to get. I know it’ll arrive one day, but I just hate waiting.

We finally started to learn coding in our CS (computer science)class, and solar, so good. I’ve managed to understand everything our teacher taught us(though it might be because it’s our first class). Our teacher, Miss D, is still begging us to give her the white form(A form someone need when they change from one form class to another ). She said their’s too many students in her class for her to concentrate on each one. I wonder what she’ll think next year when we move into our new campus. I don’t know how many new students there will be by then, but it’ll be lots more than this time. I guess the SCIE’s going to hire more teachers next year, so Miss D won’t have to face the flood of students alone. It’ll be a big challenge, but she’ll get used to it.

Miss D is a plump teacher that’s rather nice if you don’t break the rules. I really like her and it’s a shame that she’ll only teach us for a few weeks. I’m pretty sure I'm gonna miss her a lot.

The library is closed at 3 p.m on Fridays, so I didn’t succeed in registering a library account. Maybe I'll go there in the morning next time........

Today I’m gonna talk about one of the things parents care about most: foods.

There are two canteens in the SCIE, the Chinese canteen and the western canteen. The western canteen has two kinds of staple food(rice and spaghetti), three kinds of meat(fish, pork and beef) and   a few kinds of drinks, I don’t quite remember what they are, but I’m pretty sure that watermelon juice is included. The food there is OK, but is a bit expensive. For example, a meal of pork and spaghetty costs you about 28 yuan.

The Chinese canteen has two windows. The one in the left serves the same food every day, including pig ears with rice(¥18), pot-stewed meat with rice(¥18), plain chicken(¥12) and so on.The food in the second window changes every day and is contained in small dishes. You can choose which kind of food you want, but they are also expensive. A meal of one bowl of rice and two dishes costs about ¥16.

The third way of having lunch is to get out of school at noon and have lunch in the restaurants around the SCIE. Now I don’t know much about this, but you have to get registered at the beginning of the school year to do so.

The last way of having lunch is to order a take-out. This is what I usually do, and this is what many students do (Don’t judge). Take-outs have a lot of advantages. First of all, as we can all see, you can choose whatever you want if you’re ordering a take-out. Also, restaurants serve cheaper and more delicious food, if you know how to choose, that is. Now some of you might tell me that food outside aren’t healthy and stuff, but the fact is, they’ll be pretty healthy if you know what to order. There’s a nice restaurant that I go to even before I got into the SCIE. It’s called”gu tian dao xiang” and I urge you to try it out. If it’s not the type that you like, I recommend SCIE’s very own takeaway platform, Yami Daily! Do try the “taste green”, it’s both nutritious and healthy! Join the Yami club or search “yami” on WeChat to learn more!!!

These are the four ways you can have lunch in the SCIE. You can choose one that suits you most, or like most people does, eat in a different place every day. Of course, if you don’t know what to choose, you can always buy instant noodles at the shop........

Miss D checked our homework today. Last class’ homework was to make a program that makes the user guess a series of “lucky numbers”. She said that if you type in the lucky numbers as a string(like the lettres a b c d), It’ll be alright, but if you type in the lucky numbers as an integer, she’ll be able to crash it. Well, she did crash some programs by typing in random letters, but not mine. I typed the numbers in as an integer(because programs using integers would be loads faster than the ones using strings when there are 100 lucky numbers), but I’ve already thought about the problem last night and made some improvements. By using a line of program:

    If number==int(number):

*the program would just ignore the coming codes if you type  something like”x” , “apple” or “asdfghjkl”.

I succeeded in preventing errors from occurring. Miss D was both delited and surprised and asked me to send my program to her e-mail so she could have a better look.

I had my first class at the USACO club , or coding club today. The club leader was pretty nice and taught us a lot of stuff like len(x) and type(x). He was quite confident in his speech and made everything  easy to understand. We learnt more than we did in our computer science class(Of course, that’s only because we were learning flowcharts in our CS classes, not python). I’m really looking forward to our next USACO class.

2019.8.30

First of all, I got into the team for the dodgeball game on the House competition next Wednesday. Hold on a second, I know some you don’t know what dodgeball or House competitions are, so I’m gonna spare some time explaining. You’re free to skip this part if you already know.

The students in SCIE are put into four different houses(Metal, Wood, Water and Fire) before their first day of school. The four houses compete against each other on the house competition on Wednesday. The house competitions are different every week. For example, we had a tug of war last time. I’d love to tell you that Metal, which is my house, won last time, but the truth is, we lost. That’s why we want to win so much this time.

The house competition next week would be a game of dodgeball. Here are the rules:

Two groups stand in a big square with a centre line. A player mustn’t cross the centre line or get out of the square. A “spy” of each team stands outside the square, behind their rival teams. For example, the spy of team A stands behind team B, and vice versa. The spies has the ball at the beginning of the game, but they can’t “kill” anyone on the first round. Instead, they have to pass the ball to their teammates in the square. The game then officially begins. All the players inside the square would be counted as “living” while all the ones outside the square would be counted as “dead” and would join the spies of their team(except the two spies that had the ball at the beginning of the game, as they would be resurrected at the death of their first teammate and join their comrades inside the square). Three things can happen when you are in the square:1, you got hit by the ball thrown by a rivaling player or spy. This way, you will “die” and become a spy. 2, you saw a ball coming and you ducked just in time. This way, nothing will happen. 3, you caught a ball thrown by a rivaling player or spy. This way, you have one extra life. A spy can catch and throw balls as well, but they are still counted as “dead” and can’t get into the square. Similarly, a living player will “die” if he or she gets out of the square. If you have the ball, you can choose to pass it to someone else or throw it at your rivals. A “living” rival will die if you succeed in hitting him. A team wins if the other team has no more living players.

That’s all there is to know about the rules of dodgeball. We play it every sports class.
