Frankly speaking, however great and classic it may be, the original Chess game is very strange, for there are too many unreasonable points in it. The Bitian Battlechess was originally designed to be a more reasonable version of the Chess game.
Let’s list some unreasonable points:
1.Sorry my Queen, you can’t move for the time being because the little pawn, 200 meters away, is moving!
2.I’m so sorry we’ve lost a knight, but there are only two knights in our kingdom. We can’t get a third one.
3.The Queen is really awesome but the King can do almost nothing outside being checked...
4.The rook, albeit looking like a tower, can move, and moves really fast! Unbearable!
5.The faithful bishops are fast-moving muggles...
Now let’s see how I get rid of these problems...
Firstly, every round, EVERY chess can take action (move and attack) once.
Secondly, instead of having all the chess pieces initially, chess pieces (including Kings and Queens) are bought in-game and can be rebought once lost.
Thirdly, Kings and Queens are regarded as special heroes and heroines. Every King and Queen has his or her unique ability.
In addition, bishops are now called Priests, able to cast magic bolts and heal others (Priests in CFBU learn from the healer Yosin);
rooks are now called towers, unable to move but able to shoot the coming enemy and withstand a lot of punishment; knights are super powerful, as they hit hard, move fast and don heavy armor.
In order to add such things to the battlechess, a series of rules must be set up first.
Chess pieces are bought with gold. Both sides start the game with 6 gold. The price of the chess pieces are evaluated according to their power.
Pawn: 2 gold
Priest: 3 gold
Tower: 4 gold
Knight: 5 gold
First hero (heroine): 6 gold
Second hero (heroine): 9 gold (White) 8 gold (Black)
Note that the second Black hero (heroine) is 1 gold cheaper to compensate for the Black’s loss in not going first.
For each player’s turn, there are two stages, namely Pre-action Stage and Action Stage.In the Pre-action Stage, the players first gains gold equivalent to the number of the chess pieces they already own. Then they buy chess pieces and put them on the bottom line. (If it’s full, the chess piece can be put on the second line, and so on...) In the Action Stage, the players put some or all of their chess pieces into action. Note that the chess pieces just bought in the Pre-action Stage can’t attack in the following Action Stage.
When put into action, the chess piece can move twice and attack once. To be more detailed, the chess piece can move once, attack, and move once more. The total step count of the chess piece’s moving before and after attack can’t exceed its speed. For instance, a 4-speed knight, after moving 2 steps pre-attack, can only move 2 steps at most post-attack.
To conclude, the game can be divided into: White Pre-action, White Action, Black Pre-action, Black Action and so on.
Now let’s talk about the properties of the individual chess pieces.
To begin with, let’s see the stats a chess piece can have.
Hit Point (HP): The amount of damage the chess piece can take before being eliminated. All ordinary units have 1 hit point. Heroes and heroines can have multiple hit points.
Armor (Also known as Defence): The amount of damage the chess piece can take each turn without actually being harmed.
Attack Damage (Or simply Attack ): The base amount of damage dealt by the chess piece when it’s attacking.
Range: The maximal manhattan distance the projectile that the chess piece fires can reach. For melee pieces it’s always 1.
Speed: The maximal total steps the chess piece can go pre-attack and post-attack. (One step means going one tile in the front, back, left or right)
Here are the basic stats of all the ordinary pieces:
Pawn:0 Armor, 1 Attack, 1 Range, 2 Speed
Priest:0 Armor, 1 Attack, 2 Range, 2 Speed
Skill: Heals 1 HP for a hero inside the Priest’s range.
Tower:3 Armor, 1 Attack, 2 Range, 0 Speed
Knight:2 Armor, 2 Attack, 2 Range, 4 Speed
Now let’s go on to heroes and heroines.
Heroes and heroines, or Kings and Queens, are the most important chess pieces throughout the whole game. The command of Heroes and Heroines is always a key part and often determines win and loss. Be sure to make the best use of them!
Heroes and heroines have skills. Passive skills are always enabled while active skills have a cooldown of 2 turns.(That is to say, if the skill is activated on the first turn, it goes through cooldown on the second and third turn and regains availability on the fourth turn.)
Below is a list of heroes and heroines:
Heroes:Genius 3 HP, 0 Armor, 1 Attack, 4 Range, 3 Speed.
Active Skill: Attack also deals damage to enemies directly beside the target. (Just like a + sign) Plus, deals +1 damage to the center.
In order to deal splash damage, ranged heroes are allowed to target empty tiles. There is also absolutely no friendly fire.
Canida 4 HP, 1 Armor, 2 Attack, 1 Range, 3 Speed.
Active skill: Attack deals double damage.
Felida 3 HP, 0 Armor, 2 Attack, 3 Range, 2 Speed
Active skill: Attack deals damage in a 3*3 area of effect.
Prince 4 HP, 1 Armor, 2 Attack, 1 Range, 2 Speed
Active skill: Choose one of your pieces. It can attack twice this turn.
Termo 3 HP, 0 Armor, 2 Attack, 3 Range, 2 Speed
Active skill: Attack deals damage to all enemies in a single direction (front, back, left, right).
We have GCFPT five heroes at present.
Heroines: Yosin 3 HP, 0 Armor, 1 Attack, 2 Range, 2 Speed
Passive skill: Allies within 3*3 square (including Yosin herself)
gets +1 Armor and +1 Range.
Active skill: Instantly heals an allied piece to full health.
Shiyu 3 HP, 0 Armor, 1 Attack, 3 Range, 2 Speed
Passive skill: Enemies defeated by Shiyu are coverted into ally.
Active skill: Fires a single-target coverting heart in one of the four simple directions.
If the coverting fails, the pieces are automatically turned into gold. Heroes and Heroines cannot be coverted.
Rebecca 4 HP, 1 Armor, 2 Attack, 1 Range, 3 Speed
Active skill: Deals attack damage to all enemies in a 3*3 square around Rebecca.
Lotus 3 HP, 2 Armor, 2 Attack, 1 Range, 3 Speed
Active skill: This turn, gains +1 Attack and +2 Speed.
Zeszy 3 HP, 1 Armor, 1 Attack, 3 Range, 3 Speed
Active skill: Instantly kills an enemy ordinary target and heal to full health.
Now we have five heroines: YSRLZ.
There is an extra special mechanism in the game called the upgrading system. Upgrading nearly always cause great change. Without this system, it’s really uneasy to end a game (Before the introduction of this system, one game lasted for 45 minutes and was forced to end because the lights were off).Both hero(in)es and ordinary pieces can be upgraded. Hero(in)es get upgraded by collecting experience, while ordinary pieces are upgraded with gold.
The upgrading system is closely related to the triangle number chart(1,3,6,10,15,and so on...)
Experience is gained when an enemy is defeated with any hero or heroine present. If the enemy is defeated by a hero(ine), the experience straightly goes to the hero(ine); if it’s defeated by an ordinary piece, to whom the experience goes is decided by the player. All ordinary pieces give 1 experience, while hero(in)es give 2+EXP/2 (EXP is the experience gained by the hero(ine)) experience, rounded up. Hero(in)es regain all their experience when revived.
Every hero(ine) starts at level 1 with 0 experience. To level up to level n, n(n+1)/2 total accumulated experience is required. For example, EXP 6 Yosin is Level 3, EXP 12 Yosin is level 4 (10<12<15).
Experience isn’t reset when leveling up. The cost of hero(ine) revival is also related to the hero(ine)’s level. To be more exact, it’s(7+2*LVL) gold, with LVL indicating the level of the hero(ine) at the time of defeat.
When leveled up, the player chooses one of the following upgrades:
+2 HP, +1 Armor, +1 Attack, +1 Range, +1 Speed, -1 Cooldown
Ordinary pieces can also be leveled up. The upgrading of ordinary pieces is universal, which means that EVERY ordinary piece, regardless of its kind, is affected by the upgrade. The first universal upgrade costs 15 gold, the nth universal upgrade costs(n+4)(n+5)/2 gold. Ordinary pieces can be upgraded in four aspects: +1 Armor, +1 Attack, +1 Range (Ranged pieces only) and +1 Speed.
Now I have introduced the game in detail to you. It includes:
Pre-action Stage: Gain money and buy pieces!
Action Stage: Everyone, move, attack and move again!
Properties of chess pieces:
HP, Armor, Attack, Range, Speed, Skill (Active and passive)
Upgrading and experience system
This is the current 1 vs 1 non-story mode of the game. It now requires a complete set of Chess pieces, a Chess board and a recording paper. Hope you like it!
A Brief Introduction to the Bitian Story
In the distant time and space, there is a magical continent, on which two countries are established. One is called Central Federal Bitian Union (CFBU)......
In the distant time and space, there is a magical continent, on which two countries are established. One is called Central Federal Bitian Union (CFBU), the other is called Termish Empire (TE). It remains unknown whether there are other unexplored countries. The story is mainly focused on six characters living in CFBU.
CFBU consists of four city states, namely Bitcity, Yolihah, Shinora and Reteree, among which Bitcity is the capital and is far more important than all other city states. This is why CFBU is a central federal republic. It is a federal country with Bitcity as the center. When the city states vote in the Central Federal Congress, Bitcity has three votes, while the other city states have only one. CFBU has advanced bionic and electronic technology, as well as an especially futuristic building design. However, magic still exists in this country, making CFBU a mixture of tech and magic. UNIMADE smartphones, the product of the Central Federal Administration of Electronic Manufacturing, is extremely popular among people in CFBU.
People in CFBU call themselves Bitians, or “比先人”in Chinese. Bitcity should be translated into “比西铁”or“比城”but not “比特城”, just as New York should be translated into“纽约”.
There are six major characters in CFBU, two of which are especially important.
Genius, as the main male character, uses a bow as his weapon. Not only does he pursue archery skills, but also he’s very keen on bionic technology. Genius is very open-minded, ready to learn everything, thus has the broadest horizon in all the major characters.
Basic skill: Launches a exploding energy arrow that deals damage in an area of effect.
Yosin, as the main female character, takes the role of a healer. She is caring, full of sympathy and very optimistic. Her words are especially inspiring, boosting everyone around her. Everyone loves to make friends with Yosin.
Passive skill: Nearby allies get extra range and armor.
Active skill: Heals an injured ally to full health.
It is worth mentioning that since Yosin gives extra range, she is the best partner of Genius. Genius would shoot farther in the presence of Yosin. However, Yosin is extremely weak at the beginning, even weaker than some ordinary soldiers! She’s going to do something to become stronger and more independent... (She managed to do so)
Canida (Ka-nai-da) is another major character. He is brave and power-worshipping, making him a good warrior, or to be more exact, berserker. Canida believes that everything can be done with sufficient power, which is not so close from true...
Basic skill: The next attack deals double damage. (As a damage-oriented character, Canida could instakill most ranged hero with one hit with the basic skill.)
Shiyu (Shee-yoo) is a young and attractive girl characterized by her dual horsetail hairstyle. Her great charm can even attract enemies, making them fight on Shiyu’s side. Shiyu is even weaker than Yosin, arousing the will of protection of Canida. However, Shiyu doesn’t feel good about Canida, as he is a little too crude...
Passive skill: Enemies defeated by Shiyu instantly fight by her side.
Active skill: Fires a heart that can instantly covert an enemy into an ally.
Felida (Fe-lee-da) is the main wizard character. He is greatly focused on the way the world works. He majors in fire magic, but also learns many other types of magic. As a straight A student, he is always ready to pass on his knowledge to others. However, unlike Genius, he doesn’t care much for things outside the magic world...
Active skill: Casts a powerful exploding fireball at the enemies.
Rebecca is a very special girl. Although girls are thought to be very weak and can only learn support magic, Rebecca is a battlemage, learning both warrior skill (with Canida) and fire wizardry (with Felida) and fighting in the frontline as Canida and the powerful knights do. In battle, Rebecca is as powerful as, if not more powerful than, the male warrior Canida. The enemies fear her fire-inbued blades...
The six main character is united and has a name called Team YUHAN (Yoo-han). This name is proposed by Genius, the only one that knows much about the Oriental culture. YUHAN comes from the verse”校尉羽书飞瀚海” in an ancient Chinese poem called”燕歌行”, which means that members of Team YUHAN would fight together bravely everywhere and go very far.
There are three other characters that is worth mentioning. They are not Bitian, but Termish. They fight against Team YUHAN.
Termo, as the leader of Termish Empire, aims to conquer the world with advanved weaponry. He is a distinguished engineer and can combine engineering with dark magic. The Termish Cannon, designed by Termo, is widely feared and enjoys a fame equivalent to the Russian Katyusha cannon in the real world.
Basic skill: fires a solid beam of destruction, dealing great damage to enemies caught in the line.
Lotus is the queen of the cats. She is very ambitious and also aims to conquer the world. (Real-world cats also wants to conquer the world, don’t they? Why do they do so many unpleasant things? It’s obvious provocation!) Lotus is heavily armored and leads a heavy armored cat troop. These cat warriors are really durable, offensive and agile, posing a great threat to the Bitians...
Basic skill: Gains extra speed and attack.
p.s. Lotus is Termo’s wife. Why would Termo love a cat? When not in battle, Lotus takes the form of a nekomusume... that’s the ACGN stuff...
Zeszy is another very interesting character. She is a top fan of Termo, and is fascinated by Termo’s great power. She loves dark magic, so she is now a witch apprentice. As a smart girl, she learns impressively fast...
Basic skill: Instantly kills an ordinary enemy unit and heals to full health.
So that’s all the characters that are worth mentioning.Let’s move on to the plot design.
The initial game takes the form of battle chess. The rules of battle chess will be written in another document, since it has little to do with the background and plot. The game is divided into several chapters, with each chapter reflects a certain period of time in the character’s life.
Chapter One: Encounter Difficulty: Easy
In this chapter, the basic rules are introduced to the player. After that, the player goes through some easy levels to get to know the characters’ ability and special skills. Then in some levels, the player knows the basic relationship between the characters, especially the partnership between Genius and Yosin. After a key event, the game enters the second chapter.
Key event: Yosin’s leave
As the Princess of Yolihah, the city of natural magic, Yosin’s mission is to bring the healing and inspiring magic of Yolihah to the world. However, being too weak individually largely hinders her ability. To make herself stronger, Yosin would have to go deep to the core of the Yolihah Forest and take Yolihah’s most valuable treasure, the Bracelet of Power. Taking it is not at all easy... She has to get through a series of very challenging trials. On the other side, Genius would have to fight without his best partner...
Chapter Two: Restart Difficulty: Hard
Without each other, Genius and Yosin both have a really hard time... However, the matter is not as bad as they think. They will encounter many new and interesting people...
Level design in this chapter is very special. There are two branches in this chapter, one G chapter telling the story of Genius after Yosin’s leave, forcing the player to how Genius and cooperate with other characters, one Y chapter following the steps of Yosin, giving the player many special trials. (Mini-games, Puzzles, Special Rules Battle, etc...)
This chapter is meant to be very difficult, meaning that it’s not so easy to start a new life with the taken-for-granted partner absent. Most not-so-smart people (70%+) would have to quit playing the game, or switch to an easier level of difficulty (I plan to design three difficulty levels for each game). I do this on purpose because this game (medium difficulty) is aimed to those who love tactic logic and are willing to think (Cooperation between characters will become much more important in the mid-to-late game, and it requires very good logical skill)
Chapter Three: Reunion Difficulty: Medium
As soon as Yosin gets the Bracelet of Power, there comes a bad news. Canida has made the deal with Termo, getting dark power and fighting against the CFBU. Yosin, with the Bracelet of Power, have become really powerful and more than ready to help.
Yosin finally gets together with her former partner Genius, who is much stronger than before with the bionic mechanical outer body.
The two, both much stronger than before, goes on a trip to defend against their former friend Canida...
Chapter Four: Reborn Difficulty: High
After Canida finally realizes that power is not everything, he comes back to Bitcity and fight for the light. Team YUHAN faces several difficult challenges and defend Bitcity from enemy invasions. They finally managed to stop Termish Empire from conquering the world. In this chapter, the player is required to have a deep understanding of the characters and use them flexibly in order to pass the levels.
Key Event: After the Final Fight
When the Ultimate Weapon was about to put in use, someone else managed to destory the weapon, causing it to explode! Luckily, with Yosin’s Ultimate Skill (Group Invulnability), Team YUHAN survived the ultimate explosion. Strangely Enough,the Termish also got invulnablity from the skill... Maybe they are allies now?
This is what I have now written about the game. Further game mechanism and detailed level information will be discussed in future documents. Thank you for your reading! It’s not so easy to read such a long article in English:)

The first one I want to introduce is my best partner Genius. He has been my friend since we were kids. Genius majors in Bionic machinery and takes archery as his combat skill. He is open-minded and willing to learn everything. With Genius, life is more diverse and colourful.
He has become my partner in battle because I can offer the armor he needs and give extra range to him, further improving his potential. He has always wanted a set of bionic battlesuit... Hope he could get one!
