Six styles of stop-motion

1.Clay Animation

It is a unique technique of stopmotion animation that uses clay figures. It involves sculpting characters and background sets out of clay.

Use clay to squeeze out every expression of each character. Then move them bit by bit and take lots of pictures.

Clay animation gives viewers visual sense of reality.

It's difficult to make similar clay characters, and clay melts easily when heated.

2.Puppet Animation

Puppet animation is a technique that incorporates the animation of still puppets. Similar to clay animation in many ways, the characters and sets are already made in full forms instead of being made while the animation is being shot.

Puppet animation is similar to clay animation, but puppet animation requires the producer to manipulate the characters.

Puppet animation is more popular. Characters, costumes, and props are more realistic than clay animations.

But the cost of making a puppet animation is very high. If the characters are dirty, it's hard for the producer to clean up their clothes and hair. When the producer shoot a puppet animation, be sure to control the puppet, or else the character willbe down.

3.Cut-Out Animation

Cutout animation is used for producing animations using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut out from various materials such as, cardboard, stiff photographs etc.

Use hand painting characters, props and scenes on paper, then cut them off and put them on the table for animation.

The production costs are very cheap. If the characters are dirty or broken, it's very convenient to change a new one.

The producer need to draw different gestures and expressions with hands. It is very difficult to do the characters of paper stand on the table. If there is wind, the character will be blown down.

4.Pixilation Animation

Pixilation is one of the most difficult forms of stop-motion animation. In this form live actors change their movement in each frame of the animation. They pose while multiple frames are taken and the position changes slightly in each frame.

A real person is a character of an animation. When making, character need to lie  on the floor and act, then maker shooting every actions.

The technique of expression is novel and vigorous. The real man is better  manipulated.

The characters need a rest and they don't know how fast the action will take.

5.Object Animation

Object animation involves the animated movements of nondrawn objects such as toys, blocks, dolls, etc.

Everything can be seen everywhere. Every article has his life. It's convenient to  choose characters.

They have no facial features and are difficult to express emotions.

6.Silhouette Animation

Silhouette animation involves characters which are only visible as black silhouettes. This is usually accomplished by back-lighting detailed cardboard cut-outs, though other methods exist. It is partially inspired by shadow play.

Silhouette animation is very similar to Chinese shadow play. The producer manipulated the characters behind the light.

Silhouette animation is very artistic, simple, unique style. It's easier for producers  to express emotions.

It's complicated and takes a long time to make. No color, and if the story is ordinary, the audience will be bored.
