"Why do we need to read books if we'relearning how to bake delicious food?" a student asked with confusionduring a baking class.

Patiently, Ms Cathy explainedto the students that reading takes various forms in our lives. Reading books isone form, but observing baking tools, ingredients, and the changing states offood in the real world is also a form of reading. With the careful guidance ofMs Cathy, the students eagerly followed her lead and began exploring the art ofcreating culinary delights.

This was a little anecdotefrom a reading and baking class. Every Wednesday afternoon, duringextracurricular enrichment activities, the students would gather in the bakingclassroom to learn baking skills and life skills from their teachers.

Before learning how to bakecakes, the teacher would have the students open the book "Baking Basics"and look up the tools needed for baking. They would then match the toolsmentioned in the book with the actual tools in front of them.

The children were unfamiliarwith the "zester" mentioned in the book, and coincidentally, onestudent wanted to make an orange chiffon cake. Seizing the opportunity, theteacher had the students compare the shape, characteristics, and usage of thezester as shown in the book and demonstrated how to use it on the spot. Thestudents learned to use the zester through hands-on practice, deepening theirunderstanding of different baking tools.

Under the guidance of the teacher, thechildren opened different baking books, found their favourite pastries, andrecorded the essential baking points. One student was particularly diligent inher studies. She would first look at the table of contents, identify her favouritepastry, and then open the book to the corresponding page to view the bakingsteps, demonstrating a conscious effort to seek information. She said, "Iwant to learn how to make the most delicious pastry and bake it for my parentsat home."

The children were dividedinto groups and led by teachers Cathy and Verna to follow the steps in thebook. This class taught them how to separate egg whites, use an eggbeater, anddecorate pastries.  After placing all thepastries in the oven, the students also made notes on the essential baking points, cultivating a habit of learning, and recording simultaneously.

When all the pastries packaged, the teachers and the children started to clean the tables, organise the items, and collect all the baking tools used, washing them in the sink. Each childgradually realised that "cleaning is also a part of life". Ms Cathysaid that baking is a healing art that brings warmth and joy to the soul.  She hoped that in the future, when thestudents live in foreign countries, they can draw healing energy from baking.

As evening approached, the setting sunstretched the children's shadows as they clumsily carried bags of small cakestowards the school gate. Passing classmates followed the aroma and asked,"What's that? It smells so good! Give me one." The child who wasasked for the pastries lifted a small face, protecting the food, and said,"Just one, no more. These are the cakes I made myself. I want to bringthem home to my mom and dad."

The children shared the sweetness they hadcarefully crafted with friends and family. FCG hopes that its students will have a heart full of love for life andlearn to share the beauty. At the same time, FCG also encourages children toexplore and think critically. Students can learn life skills and developproblem-solving skills by asking questions during baking classes, conductingindependent inquiry, and combining reading with practice during thereading-baking class.
