"Personality is shaped beyond the confines of theclassroom." - Kurt Hahn
Numerous attempts
Yet, still met with failure.
Aries, plagued by a fear of heights, stood on the 325mpedestrian walkway for the first time. He once questioned his decision toventure into this daunting situation. Nevertheless, Aries mustered his courage, wandered for 10 minutes, and ascended the tower six times but ultimately failedto conquer the fear of heights. However, a tiny seed of overcoming this fearhad been planted, showing signs of future growth.
Sometimes, despite our efforts, the desired outcomeremains elusive. This inevitable frustration is part of the growth process forchildren. It is more important for students to learn to face failure with apositive mindset than to complete challenges.
Fear stems from a lack of experience.
Aries, the morning's frustration persists.
The "Skydive Adventure" project offeredthree options: red, blue, and green. Aries chose the challenging red line tocontinue his quest. When asked about his situation by the head teacher, Ariessilently uttered, "I believe I can do it." Subsequently, Ariessuccessfully tackled the 298-meter-high red line and triumphantly completed thethousand-step ladder.
The fear in one's heart often arises from uncertaintysurrounding unknown or new experiences. By bravely venturing forth, one realisesthat fear only exists because they have never attempted it. Teachersconsistently encourage students to embrace challenges, learn from failures, andgrow stronger.
Unity prevails
Over individual speed
Standing atop a precarious board, suspended 298 metersabove the ground, Alexander's heart raced. From such heights, the perspectiveshifted, with the clear blue sky seemingly within reach and the once toweringbuildings now appearing diminutive. Although secured by a safety rope, theabsence of solid ground gave him an unsettling feeling, as if he could fall atany moment. Tugging at the swaying rope, he hesitated to take a step, contemplating retreating to his starting position and abandoning the challenge.
Having completed the challenge first, Star returned toAlexander and instructed him, "Open your feet in a figure-eight pattern, look at me, and walk slowly." Encouraged by Star's words, Alexanderattempted to find solace in the rope's grip, cultivating an internal sense ofsecurity, and cautiously extended his feet forward. With the support of hisclassmates, they all reached the finish line. In this seemingly simple yetsignificant moment, the values and understanding of their peers were activated. They embraced their surroundings, confronted their inner fears, fearlesslyexpanded their psychological boundaries, and fostered resilient hearts.Simultaneously, their immense energy infected others, spreading positivity.
While traversing the high-altitude rope, the studentswalking ahead consistently glanced back to encourage their trailing peers. Theresounding voices of "You can do it, keep going!" filled theGuangzhou Tower, nourishing everyone with positive energy. In a challengingenvironment, students witnessed the power of unity and cooperation. Thisembodiment of physical teamwork and mental well-being, represents the essenceof the school. Through collaborative learning, students develop a sense ofcamaraderie and empathy, promote physical and psychological health, and learnto embrace opportunities while overcoming challenges.
Your presence
Gives me the courage to forge ahead
After completing their fluorescent paintings andreplenishing their energy in the evening, the children prepared to face thefinal stage - the thousand-step ladder. Their parents eagerly awaited theirarrival, and together, they would conquer the last step.
Throughout the ascent, no one rushed or complained. The faster students willingly paused, waiting for their slower companions, offering comfort and encouragement: "Come on, you're doing great!"The parents leading the way also stopped, patiently accompanying their hesitantchildren, helping them overcome their internal resistance. Whenever a childcontemplated retreat, a pair of supportive hands would guide them forward, instilling the courage to continue. Sometimes, education means navigatingsetbacks and challenges alongside your child. Parents accept their children'snegative emotions, providing them love and support. This approach grantschildren the security they need to explore the world, unafraid of failure.
As night fell, the students gazed at the radiant PearlRiver in the distance, surrounded by their loved ones. They possessed boundlesscourage at that moment, cheering to celebrate their newfound transformation.

The Fettes College Guangzhou grit courses takestudents beyond the confines of the campus, engaging them in activities such asmountain climbing, cycling, outdoor cross-country, and high-altitudeadventures. These experiences cultivate resilience, fortify theirdetermination, foster self-motivation, and provide them with an enduringpositive impact from learning outdoors. In the future, when children face theunknown world independently, they will approach it confidently, firmlybelieving in their ability to overcome any obstacle.
