Week 10
木水新o清 2017-11-27

This week, we have finished the shootingprocess. During the filming process, I have participated in directing the filmshooting process according to the script as a script writer. Besides, I think itis necessary to study the theater If a good script writer wants to improve hisquality. Although the director may follow his own thoughts, the script writerhas the responsibility to help improve the script.

I think the director needs to improve “identity“ability. When I wrote the script, I have deleted some unnecessary part to makethe meaning more clear. However, during the production process, director hasadded them and ordered the cameramen to film these scenes. Whereas, the cameramenalso think some dialogue are unnecessary. In the end, we still filmed these asthe director insisted on it. Maybe next time, we could decide this by adiscussion.

Besides, I have also become a soundengineer during the filming production. I have arranged the position of thezoom recorder carefully and recorded every clip. Besides, I have taken notes onevery clip in order to make every piece of audio more clearly. This wouldbenefit for the editor.

I have also done a lot of research on it. Thesuccess of a film work has a close relationship with the director, scriptwriter, actor and editor. During the process of sound production, it often uses simultaneousand later sound effects at the same time. However, the use of the simultaneoussound is to strive for the authenticity of the film.

I watched <Himalaya: Ladder to Paradise>for several times, and I was amazed at the sound of it.

<Himalaya: Ladder to Paradise> mainly describes the"mountaineering school students" this special group. Theirresponsibility is to bring climbers to climb the mountain peak, helpingclimbers to realize their dreams, but to do that others dream architect.

During the process of shooting <Himalaya: Ladder to Paradise>,which is a film that exterior environment is extremely bad. They walk in such difficultcircumstances, but still carrying heavy machinery and equipment. Therefore, amovie recording technician is also a successful film architect. There may notbe any flash at the stage, but behind the scenes, for the busy figures, theycan't be ignored.

According to the sound engineer of <Himalaya: Ladder to Paradise>,high altitude recording is difficult, because sometimes the battery will freezeat night, not lighting. As a result, the dark environment for recording wouldbecome more difficult. Degna Jean chose a number of portable devices to recordradio, such as Zoom H4n, 2 batteries of 5 which would be able to make it workbecause of high availability. Some conventional recording equipment, such assounddevice744T or 664, has a problem on the cost of production. Besides, itsweight can not make continuous recording on snow mountain. It can be seen thatthe selection of equipment need to fit the environment rather than focusing onthe most professional equipment. The ultimate performability is the hard truth.

The difficulty which exists in late editing and pre recording arethe same in <Himalaya: Ladder to Paradise>. In the process ofmountaineering, there is a lot of noise. The voice of wind and snow oftencovers the voice of people, and the wind and snow are objective environmentalnoise. If we cut off and record the clean dialogue, then we would lose the realtexture of the documentary. The first contradiction to get the sound materialis how to express the things that have happened in the snow country objectivelyand clearly. The pre-preparation for climbing period will be as much aspossible using simultaneous sound. Starting from mountaineering, they have addedsome cool music. For example, some climbers climb when the mountains seem to betilted, feels the whole are in a state of weightlessness vacuum from the cameralens. It only uses some seconds to add music for the documentary. It seems thatjust a few disharmonious notes could make the steep performance most vividly.

The movie also has many exciting creations, such as some lifeelements of, like a lot of people have not seen the plateau yak, naturally, theynever heard the sound of it. Although the sound is not recorded during thepre-production, but Degna Jean will fill it in post-production. This could makethe images of animal have life sense. It is well deserved to be one of thehighest sound elements in the world, except for human beings. There are somemix of recording wind noises, creating a sense of feeling. Not only highlightsthe documentary, but also enhances the sense of reality, so as to promote themovie viewers feel personally on the scene, full of crisis and holiness.

Besides, during the practice and recording at the scene, I havelearned a lot.

  • The director's perspective: What voice does the director want tohear in the lens and what kind of sound in the lens? This is the basic premiseof any decision which made by the reverberant teacher.

  • The position and scheduling of actors: how large does the actor'smovement in the lens? There is a need for more microphones to record separatelyin the lens which some people walking around and some sitting there.

  • Camera position: how far is the camera from the performance area? This determines how far your microphone can be near to the actor. If the strongdirectional microphone is not useful, it is best to put a hidden microphone inthe performance area.

  • The Scene of the lens: What is the range of camera lensviewfinder? It has a direct impact on a series of problems in the following: First, the microphone can be as close as possible to the actors, and not appear in thescreen; Secondly, the action between the operator and the cameraman must becoordinated (If the scene has changed, the microphone distance must change too).Lighting: if the shadow of a hanger is raised high and high, it will be takeninto the picture, which indicates that there is a problem in the lightingscheme. In fact, when the light is debugged, the shadow of the hanger can beeliminated as long as a little attention is paid to it.

During the film production, I felt it is a goodtime to test whether I have fulfilled the responsibility of being a goodlocation researcher. Every location is fit for production.

I think I have gained the communication skillsduring arranging the site and consulting with the manger. For example, Internetcafes generally disagree with filming, I went to five internet cafes and selectthree places which the environment is better compared to others. Then I communicatedwith their managers and delivered my purposes in order to have the permission oftest shots. On the shooting day, I communicated with the manager again, besidesas we were going to shoot the scene that players playing the games, I alsocommunicated with the players in order to have their permissions. By doing arelative good pre-production, the filming process has gone smoothly. For thewar scene location, I have communicated with the manager again to check it andgotten the manager’s permission too. In order to guide us for the location, he accompaniedwith us during the film production process.

As a script writer, I am familiar with thescript. Sometimes, I taught the actors how to act which is easy to guide them.Besides, sometimes, the dialogue has changed a little conforming to the characterand temperament of the actor. For me, I think it is better to design differenttypes of dialogues at the beginning in order to make the film more natural.
