Week 11:Charismaticand Transformational Leadership
In manycountries and regions, in the period of historical development, there will betransformational leaders to turn the world around. In India, Mahatma Gandhiused the nonviolence movement to lead the people of India to gain independencefrom British colonial rule. Deng Xiaoping carried out the reform and opening uppolicy in China, which made the People’s Republic of China from poverty toprosperity. During the War of Independence, Washington led the American peopleto overthrow the colonial rule that they had won and accelerated thedevelopment of the American capitalist.
From such transformational leaders, we can see thatthey share some common characteristics. Idealized influence is the fundamentalfactor in the transformational process.
They have the strong symbolic power to influencefollowers. And they can accurately find the main contradictions in theirorganization, company or country. For example, Deng Xiaoping is the Chinesedesigner. In the 1970s, Deng Xiaoping led China to open the country andintroduced a market economy. In the 1980s, he promoted China's development ofinternational trade. With the growth of economic power, China has become moreopen. Deng Xiaoping’s famous saying, "No matter the black cat or the whitecat, catching the mouse is a good cat" fully reflects his pragmaticattitude.
Transformational leaders focus on long-term goals, development goals and shared vision to inspire follower, and can change theentire organizational system to create an atmosphere for achieving goals.Usually, this long-term goal is not only persisted in this generation oftransformational leaders, but will also be passed on to the next generation ofleaders.
